  panorama help

while every effort has been made to keep this site simple and accessible to all, some use of plug-ins and java is necessary for the brisbane pan project.

currently the panoramas are in a stage of transition, so that some panoramas are available in the quicktime vr format, and some in the livepicture format and the cylpan java applet.  the intent is for future versions of the site to have a choice of all formats available to users.

the free quicktime plugin may be downloaded from the apple website at http://www.apple.com/quicktime.   please note that if performing a "custom" installation, the quicktime vr component is necessary to view the panoramas.

following are notes on the livepicture and java applet panorama viewers:

the high-resolution panoramas (but not the still images) require that the livepicture zoom plug-in is installed.  the plug-in can be downloaded directly from this site, or from livepicture's own site.

the low-resolution java panoramas do not require a plug-in, but rather uses a java applet which requires no software installation by the user.   the plug-in used here is called "cylpan" and is commercially available from the website of one of its developers, andrew nemeth.

if all else fails, high- and low-resolution still image versions are available from each panorama, from the menu below each thumbnail image.

note that due to difficulties reported by some users the livepicture java applet previously used for the panoramas has been removed and replaced with the cylpan applet, however some users are still experiencing very long delays before the image becomes scrollable.   we are attempting to rectify this difficulty at present.

  popup windows

each still image from the digital imaging, snapshots gallery, hana-bi, and brisbane pan projects sites pops up in its own new window.

this means that there is no need to right-click the link and select "open in new window" - a single left click will suffice.   to date, we have experienced no difficulties with this mechanism, if you do encounter problems then please email webmaster@carlngray.com.au

  browser optimisation & technologies

this site has been written to function in any browser that supports javascript (generally ie3 / ns3 or higher, although ie3 may have some issues) but optimised for version 4 and 5 browsers, especially internet explorer 5.

certain elements of the pages, such as border colours for tables, are not properly supported in netscape at this time.  consideration will be given to altering the pages to only included elements supported by both major browsers, once the final releases of ns6 and ie5.5 are available.

traffic measurement facilities allow us to monitor the proportion of visits made from each browser / version.   this data will be used to direct the future browser optimisation of the site.  data collected in this process will only be made available to other organisations in aggregate form i.e. overall site statistics, and never individual user behaviour.

future versions of this site (following the final releases of ns6 and ie5.5) are likely to make use of CSS and ASP technologies.
