on the evening of 16 july
2000, a total lunar eclipse was visible in the skies of australia
and most of the south pacific. many locals and tourists went
to the mount coot-tha lookout, probably the best vantage point
over the city, to view the event.
while this series of images
does not depict the eclipse itself, it depicts the precinct
at the time. given that there was almost no artificial
lighting at the time, and the full moon was obscured, this
series became an experiment in low light / no light digital
photography.
for the technically
minded, the experimental images below were shot at f2.0 / 16sec
/ iso400. predictable noise patterns (dark current noise)
have been removed using the dark frame subtraction technique, and
the image's histogram has been significantly altered in post-editing.
also taken on the evening
was a series of photographs of the "prometheus fire troupe"
which can be seen at the hana-bi
( fireworks ) section of this site.
